Artist Statement
My art was originally inspired by my beautiful surroundings in Muskoka. I discovered very quickly that the artistic endeavour allowed me to see the world and appreciate the richness of the colours and hews that surround me every day. After many years of working with oils, I was introduced to and fell in love with the process of creating Encaustic Art. From this moment on I started and continue to take in person and on-line courses to enhance my craft.
Working with melted beeswax itself became my inspiration. I love the natural aroma of this golden medium as well as the uniqueness and variety of effects that can be achieved by using a wide range of tools. I am transported by the intimacy I feel when carving the bark into a tree, or doing a molten shellac burn on rocks or water, allowing the multiple layered colours beneath, to rise to the surface. My process is both playful and joyful. I refuse to fully tame my beeswax medium and allow it to melt and flow in directions that offer uniqueness and a sense of exploration.
Leaving my teaching career in Toronto and moving to Belleville, has allowed me to become more fully engaged with Encaustic Art and my exploration of techniques. This was particularly true during the harsh days of covid when I submerged myself with on-line courses and trips on my kayak, or walks along the shores of the Bay of Quinte. Each gave me cause me to ask…how can I capture that mood/ beauty, image, or sense through a flow of wax?
